Well when you’ve lost Dickie V, who’s left defending the status quo on college basketball?
“Even ESPN analyst Dick Vitale, a former coach and long-time defender of the status quo, is re-evaluating his position. “We got a tournament going on, and everyone’s making millions,” Vitale said in an interview with Esquire. “Let those kids be able to benefit!””
Seriously though, the article does give us a good outline of the current issues facing the NCAA, the vast amount of money being made on college basketball and football is only part of the problem, but it’s a big part that gets most of the attention.
There’s also the admission scandal and how it relates to non-revenue sports and fake athletic recruiting, ongoing FBI and DOJ investigations and court battles over the rights of athletes, and a growing sense among the public that student-athletes are not getting a fair shake.
Something has to give, and I have a feeling when it does, big time college sports is not going to look the same as it does now.
The question is, what will it be?
