Link – Should MLS introduce promotion and relegation to its league system?

“Why is the absence of promotion and relegation a problem? The current soccer pyramid in the United States allows for a monopoly at the top, where gatekeepers decide who is in and who is barred from Major League Soccer. This lack of competition is a problem, because it can reward inferiority, failure, and lack of ambition.”

Wouldn’t all sports be more interesting if there was promotion and regulation in them? I mean, yeah, I get that other leagues would never go for it, because the owners would never go for it, but imagine how much more interesting late season games between bad MLB teams, and AAA teams, would be with that on the table?

Tell me that wouldn’t interest you? Tell me that wouldn’t stop tanking? Tell me it wouldn’t create compelling stories that you’d tune in to witness?

Now we just have to figure out a way to make it viable, because it would change a lot of things about how franchises are run and how they interact with the cities in which they are located.

Then again, a lot of that stuff is primed for a change anyway.
