Wouldn’t MLS having this many teams, with most who would never play each other during a given season, be a perfect situation for a first and second tier, with promotion and relegation?
Then they could even open it up to the other leagues to sit below, and potentially earn their way in to the top tier? Wouldn’t that be interesting, and much like what just about every other country does? I’d be for it!
The question would be how to determine which teams start in the higher league, and getting them to buy in, which probably means it’ll never happen.
