If Garth Snow can get Halak’s signature on a contract before he becomes a free agent on July 1st, trading a 4th round pick for his rights has the potential to be one of the best moves he’s ever made. I might even take back a few of things I’ve said about him. (Not all, they needed a goalie last season too and he didn’t get one!) Halak has put up great numbers, and is hungry for a chance to be an outright #1 goalie, the Isles are in desperate need of an outright #1 goalie.
On the other hand, if Halak doesn’t sign with the Islanders, fans will mourn the 4th round pick given away for nothing.
Fourth round picks aren’t worthless, but they also aren’t worth that much. So I like the gamble, but I hope that Snow has an inkling that Halak would sign with the Isles, and isn’t just taking a stab in the dark here. We’ll see.
Not to mention the pick was one from Blackhawks for two players the Isles weren’t even using.
