Truth is, they don’t. The game was for the bronze, they had just lost to Canada, in the game that was going to prove to the world that we were better, and winning the Bronze medal just didn’t matter.
Want even more truth? Much of the country didn’t care either. We lost to Canada, we weren’t even playing for the gold, and there were plenty of other things to do on a Saturday morning.
Personally, I didn’t watch it. I didn’t even see the score until this evening, and I didn’t know just how bad it was until I saw some of the online write-ups, like this, and this.
So yeah, it was embarrassing for the hard core hockey fans, but for most of the US, the Olympic hockey period that constitutes the one time they pay attention to hockey, ended Friday afternoon. Given how this game appeared to play out, maybe that’s a good thing.
Now when does the NHL start back up again? Or as an Islanders fan, when can I start rooting for a high draft pick?
