Thursday Night NFL Games and Player Safety

posted in: NFL | 0

So after Thursday night’s exciting Browns win, and yeah I have to take back my Twitter comment about Cleveland that was made after the Bills jumped out to an early lead, we learned that Brian Hoyer is out for the year, and EJ Manual is out for the next month or so.

If the NFL really wants to do something about player safety, can we have a serious conversation about these Thursday night games? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we seem to see quite a few injuries being suffered by players who haven’t had a full week to physically recover from the last game. Sure, professional football games have injuries all the time, and you never know when an injury might occur, but that’s all the more reason to make sure player’s bodies have plenty of recovery time between games.

Look I’m not a doctor or anything like that, but plenty of actual experts have weighed in and talked about the fact that NFL games require recovery time, and having 3 days between games is not how to do that.

This is one of many reasons why the NFL’s Insistence that they are doing everything they can to ensure player safety rings pretty hollow. (Wanting to add more games also doesn’t help!) With some creative use of bye weeks, we can surely avoid this, and maybe even make these games a bit more entertaining by letting teams have time to game plan and practice in preparation for this game. It’s a win-win!

Let’s try to figure out a way to keep players from having games 4 days apart before we talk about our dedication to player safety, ok NFL.
